FRIENDS OF THE CITIZENS FOUNDATION - Shazia Bhatti's PledgePage
In July 2005, I will be taking part in a trek across the Hindu Kush Mountains walking over difficult terrain and climbing over hundreds of metres at high altitudes. Anyone who knows me will at this point either be in a state of shock or falling about laughing, yes I'm not your regular fitness freak and yes I don't like heights, so yes, it must be a bl**dy good cause, or I wouldn't be doing it!!
The other volunteers and I will be doing this to raise funds for The Citizens Foundation (TCF) which is a privately funded not-for-profit organisation incorporated in 1995. TCF’S primary objective is to promote human capital development in Pakistan. It invests on a completely non-discriminatory basis, by taking to Pakistan's "katchi abaadis" (urban slums) a modern and rounded education, as a progressive alternative to ignorance and extremism. TCF believes lack of literacy is the root cause of poverty. There is a direct correlation between the average life expectancy at birth and adult literacy rates. People who have learned to read and write are more attentive to hygiene and health and are more likely to turn to a doctor in time of need. Part of the solution to problems in the developing world lies in education. Hungry people need to be fed, but also need to be able to earn their own living. The sick need a cure, but must also be taught to avoid the unhygienic practices that make them ill. What has TCF achieved so far • 224 school units in 26 locations across Pakistan. • 44,500+ student capacity. • More than 22,000 enrolled students. • A balanced gender ratio, close to 50% female students. • Created more than 2,500 jobs, of which 1,400+ are teachers. • 1 teacher training centre currently providing 6 weeks of entry-level training to about 350 teachers & 4 weeks of refresher training to about 1,400+ teachers during summer vacations. Key Goals To provide children with knowledge and literary skills and to establish 1,000 schools by 2010 in less privileged areas of Pakistan, catering for upto 360,000 children. More Information You can obtain more information from their website www.ftcf.org Friends of the Citizens Foundation (FTCF) was established by a group of dedicated TCF supporters in the UK and registered with the Charities Commission of England and Wales (no. 1087864) during 2001.
